Buffalo Jump nominated for Best First Novel

Apr 24, 2009

My debut thriller Buffalo Jump has been nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award for best first novel.

The shortlists for the awards—named after the pseudonym traditionally used by Canada’s hangman—were announced Thursday by the Crime Writers of Canada.

The other nominees for best first novel are: Nadine Doolittle, Iced Under; John C. Goodman, Talking to Wendigo; April Lindgren, Headline: Murder; and Phyllis Smallman, Margarita Nights.

Among the nominees for best novel were Linwood Barclay for Too Close to Home and Maureen Jennings for The K Handshape. Both are represented by my agent, Helen Heller, and have been supportive of me so I wish both luck.

Winners will be announced at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on June 4, just before Bloody Words, Canada’s premier mystery writing conference, gets underway. I’ll be making some appearances there, to be announced shortly in this space.
