I’m Off to the “Republic of Doyle”

Apr 25, 2010

It’s official: I’m heading off to Newfoundland in May to work as a story consultant on CBC’s hit TV show, Republic of Doyle. Set in beautiful St. John’s, Newfoundland, the series features a father-son team of private eyes who crack cases, and plenty of jokes, against the stunning vistas of The Rock.

I drove through Newfoundland back in 1975 with my old pal Howard Greenblatt, but we never made it to St. John’s because a hurricane was blowing in from the Atlantic. But everyone I know who has been to Canada’s oldest city--including screenwriter Avrum Jacobson, who worked on Doyle last season--raves about the people and the music, so I’ll be bringing a guitar, hoping to join in a few jams in between work on episodes of Season Two.

I’ve already met star and creator Allan Hawco, who plays Jake Doyle, co-creator Perry Chafe and producers Rob Blackie and John Vatcher, all of whom have tremendous affection for the private eye genre, so I think we are really going to have fun working together.
